Mark Slouka Debates Value of Humanities

A recent essay by Mark Slouka, professor of English language & literature, has provoked a stirring online debate.  In his Harper’s Weekly essay ”Dehumanized: When Math and Science Rule the School,” Slouka argues that study in the humanities has been overshadowed by an overemphasis on the economic returns of pursuing vocational study in math and science.  To combat this bias Slouka believes that humanists should stress the vital role that the humanities play in the construction of a robust and democratic society.
